Sara arrived at her friend Rupert's house. She rang the doorbell and waited for him to come to the front door. I hope he's home, thought Sara. The door opened, revealing Rupert. "Hey, Rupert!" said Sara. "Thanks for coming, Sara," said Rupert. "I heard you got a new game for your PS1 which you described as having infinite possibilities," Sara said. "Yeah!" exclaimed Rupert. "I'll show you it right now. Follow me!" Sara entered Rupert's house, and they both went downstairs. They walked to Rupert's large Toshiba Cinema Series TV, with a PS2 Slim hooked up to it. Next to the TV was a massive CD collection, mostly consisting of rock, heavy metal, and country albums. "Where's that game you got?" asked Sara. "Right here," Rupert replied. Rupert picked up a clear CD case, which had a burned Verbatim CD-R disc inside. 6714491d-211e-453b-a616-98b3378f276b "Hey, I've heard of this game," said Sara. "It's that one with the hard-to-remember button combos and was made by the same people who made Pa-" "YEAH!" Rupert shouted cheerfully. "My friend Thomas made this CD for me, and it takes some extra steps to run it on this console. He also taught me how to mod my console without taking it apart to make it play games with the lid open and so I can do the PS1 disc swap trick to run imported or burned games." "Let's play!" said Sara. Rupert turned on his PS2, which had two of the sensors blocked by a cut plastic straw on the left and a small ball of toilet paper on the right. After the main menu appeared, he grabbed a DualShock 2 controller and pressed the X button, entering the Browser. "How do you run burned discs like that one?" asked Sara. "Watch and learn!" Rupert spoke. Rupert inserted his copy of Tomb Raider II into the spindle. He put a small ball of toilet paper in the PS2's bottom right sensor, activating the laser and causing the spindle to spin the disc. The black CD icon popped up on the screen shortly after. Rupert then put down the controller. "Here comes the fun part," said Rupert. Rupert quickly took out the Tomb Raider II disc and put the Vib-Ribbon CD-R into the spindle. He grabbed the controller again and selected the CD icon, causing the PlayStation logo to appear on the screen. "It worked!" Sara spoke in surprise. "Yeah!" Rupert exclaimed. The TV then showed the following two screens: De20389e-5419-4666-abb9-a7c3b16f3f8a B9a673fd-d4f7-4c6d-ad64-6e2fe5617c6a The title screen to Vib-Ribbon then popped up. "Looks promising," Sara spoke. "Wait until you see the actual game," said Rupert. "You might want to look at that piece of paper Thomas made me too." Sara looked at the controls paper that Thomas drew. Rupert selected "ENGLISH", then "GAME". The game loaded, downloading its code to the PS2's RAM. The main menu popped up. Rupert selected "Play with my own choice of CD", then "Single track". The game then prompted him to insert a music CD. "First, I gotta take these out," said Rupert. Rupert removed the straw and the bottom right toilet paper ball, stopping the burned disc. He put the disc back into the case, got up, and looked at his CD collection. He then pulled one out, showing it to Sara. 89952634-2bd7-4541-a115-22dfa43223fa "You like Van Halen?" asked Rupert. "Of course," Sara replied. "I like both of their lead singers!" "Actually," said Rupert, "they have had three lead singers, the third being Gary Cherone, of 'More Than Words' fame, in '98." "Really?" asked Sara. "I never knew that! Get some more CDs, Mr. DJ!" Rupert picked out three CDs of three Sony albums: Ten by Pearl Jam, The Greatest Hits Collection by Alan Jackson, and Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest. He put the CDs on his coffee table, spreading them out. Sara put the button combo paper away. 9f4b6649-cb67-43a7-9413-c8648b31b780 "Now, make your first pick!" said Rupert. Sara looked at the CDs. She quickly made her decision. "I'll play the Van Halen one first!" "Great choice," said Rupert. Rupert took the Best of Volume 1 CD out of its case and put it in the spindle. He closed the lid, and the laser read the disc as it spun. The game recognized the CD. "Which song would you like to play?" asked Rupert. "Um... number three!" Sara replied. Rupert selected track 3: "Runnin' with the Devil". He then handed the controller to Sara. The screen showed Vibri in her regular rabbit form running across a white line. I'm ready for this, thought Sara. The song began playing, and Sara began pressing the buttons to match the shapes drawn on the paper. "Yeah, yeah, yeah Ah, yeah! I live my life like there's no tomorrow And all I've got, I had to steal Least I don't need to beg or borrow Yes I'm livin' at a pace that kills Ooh, yeah, YEAH! Runnin' with the devil..." As Sara played, she continued to concentrate and remember what button to press for each shape. "I can't believe it!" exclaimed Rupert. "You're good at this game!" "This song is actually pretty easy," said Sara. "Plus, I memorized all of the shapes and button combos." Vibri turned into her fairy queen form, and she stayed that way in the game until the song ended. At the score screen, Sara had scored 2535 points in total. Vibri then sang a congratulatory song in distorted Japanese. Sara then played tracks 4, 10, and 11, all passing them without any mistakes. She then felt like playing a different CD. "Put in that Pearl Jam CD," said Sara. Rupert removed the Van Halen CD and replaced it with the Pearl Jam CD. "I feel like playing track 3: 'Alive'," said Sara. Sara picked track 3, and she began playing it. She's really good, thought Rupert. Soon, Eddie Vedder's distinctive vocals kicked in. "Son, she said Have I got a little story for you What you thought was your daddy Was nothin' but a While you were sittin' Home alone at age thirteen Your real daddy was dyin' Sorry you didn't see him But I'm glad we talked Oh, I, oh, I'm still alive Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive, hey, oh..." Sara's body slowly lost all its flesh, leaving her appearance as white lines. Suddenly, Sara felt her hands feel numb. Her fingers retreated into her hands, which turned into triangles. "AAH!" Sara shrieked, noticing her new hands. Sara dropped the controller, causing Vibri to turn into a frog in the game. Sara watched in shock as her arms and legs thinned out until they were simple lines. Her ears moved to the top of her head, pointing out into a pair of rabbit ears. Her nose and hair then retreated into her head. "I'm gonna lose!" Sara spoke in distorted Japanese, with her English words appearing in a speech bubble. Rupert quickly grabbed the controller after Vibri turned into a worm with a TV-like head. He played the game for Sara, whose clothes merged into a triangle-shaped dress. She removed her shoes and socks as her feet also turned into triangles. Sara's eyes grew bigger with stars forming inside them. The area around her mouth then extended and pointed out slightly. Sara, now Vibri, watched as Rupert finished the song. He had earned over 2747 points, causing the in-game Vibri to sing her song. The Vibri in the room also sung along. Rupert turned around to see his friend as Vibri. "I... I can't believe it!" exclaimed Rupert. "You're Vibri now!" "Yay!" cheered Vibri. "How about a little ditty by Alan Jackson?" asked Rupert. "Yeah!" Vibri replied. Rupert opened the lid, taking out the Pearl Jam CD and putting in the Alan Jackson CD. He then selected track 19: "Mercury Blues". "This was the first Alan Jackson song Thomas ever heard when he was 9," said Rupert. "He thought this song came out in 2009, but it's actually from 1992. Most country music really is timeless... except for that recent pop-country crap that plagues country radio!" "Let's play it!" said Vibri. Rupert began playing the song, which was easy despite its medium tempo. "Well if I had money Tell you what I'd do I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or two Crazy 'bout a Mercury Lord, I'm crazy bout a Mercury I'm gonna buy me a Mercury And cruise it up and down the road." I'm getting a "Baby Baby!!" vibe right now, thought Vibri. Rupert finished the song with 2849 points. He then took out the CD and swapped it with the Judas Priest CD. He picked the eighth track and handed the controller to Vibri. "Get ready," said Rupert, "because You've Got Another Thing Comin'!" Before the song begun, Vibri took some time to get used to holding the controller in her new hands. The guitars and drums kicked in, and Vibri began playing along to the song, which did not have a lot of complicated or rotating shapes. Oh, come on! thought Rupert. I thought heavy metal was always hard in this game! Rupert and Vibri spent the rest of the day playing Vib-Ribbon, experimenting with Rupert's massive CD collection.
HOLY CRAP. THAT WAS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!
